You have decided to get some personal branding photos taken. Images that will be used for profile pictures, websites and marketing materials. But now comes the hard part, deciding how you want to portray yourself in your personal branding photos.
Step 1 – How do you want to be photographed?
Style – Do you want:
(a) to look professional?
(b) to capture traditional corporate style headshots?
(c) friendly inviting photos showcasing your warm caring nature?
(d) big smiling or laughing photos that show how fun it is to work with you?
Which of these styles suit your industry or feeling you want to convey to potential clients? You can choose any or all of these styles. The choice is yours.
Useage – Where do you want to use your photos? Profile pictures, marketing materials, banners? What format (eg. Square, Landscape or Portrait) of photos do you need for each medium (eg. Social Media vs Website vs Brochures etc).
Colours – How can you incorporate your branding colours? This can be achieved through the clothes that you wear or the location or backdrops that are used. It is also possible to be achieved through post-processing in photoshop depending on the requirements.
Step 2 – Research
Google can be your friend in helping to decide this. To search for images, click the “Images” menu under the google search box. Start with searching for images in your industry to get ideas. For example, for personal coaching try “coach personal branding photos” or for a financial planner try “financial planner headshot photos”. Each industry is different so it is best to start off with searching for images you want that are similar to that industry.
Take note of photos or styles that you like and perhaps even bring them with you when consulting with a photographer so they get an idea what you are looking for. If you don’t find anything that you like or that resonates with you, start searching for industries in related fields of work. You can also try searching for generic terms such as personal branding, corporate or headshots and see if anything comes up that you like.
Step 3 – Choose a wardrobe and products/props you want to be photographed with
To showcase a professional corporate look, then a suit or formal outfit will be required. For a friendly and inviting atmosphere you might pick lighter coloured shirts and have your picture taken outside. If you sell products, you might want to incorporate them in your images. You can also use props such as laptops, coffee cups etc.
